Old Club Med Trail and Pu'u Poa beach
While you are visiting our farm stand in Princeville, you should definitely check out the trail down the road from us. Locals refer to it as “the old club med trail” or Hanalei Plantation Rd hike. The hike is situated on the ridge overlooking the mouth of the Hanalei River. It is a short walk, only about .5 miles there and .5 miles back. Slightly downhill on the way there and mildly uphill on the way back. The trail is filled with beautiful trees and gorgeous views of Hanalei bay. At the end you will have a great view of “the bowl” surfbreak (which is really fun to watch in the winter when the waves are big) and the Hanalei Pier.
At the end of the hike you can walk down a path which will take you to Pu’u Poa beach which is good for snorkeling. The beach is connected to the Princeville Resort as well as the Hanalei Bay Resort. In fact, if you are staying at one of these hotels you can follow the beach and path to join us for lunch with the best view in town!
You may notice that the site along the ridge was featured in the movie South Pacific! In the 1960s a hotel was built along the ridge which was later turned into a Club Med Hotel in the 1970s. Along the path you will notice ruins that have been left from the old development. After the resort failed economically, the land was purchased, excavated and still awaits building permits for the next phase. The community has been very vocal against the development of this land along the Hanalei ridge and as of now there is no development (that we know of) planned. Eventually something will be probably be built in this area, so make sure to enjoy this beautiful little hike now!
Stop at our farm stand before and put in a to go order so you can picnic on the beach or come for a post hike smoothie.
We cant wait to see you! P.S. You get extra credit for running the trail. ;)
