How to make the perfect Acai bowl

We LOVE acai! It is so good for you and makes for the perfect breakfast or snack. At our farm stand, we sell acai bowls as well as acai smoothies. We also make acai fruit strips from our own Hanalei grown acai! You could say we are pretty obsessed with acai around here :). For those of you who are just learning about acai, it is a superfood berry that comes from South America. It looks like a blueberry but has a hard interior much like a coconut husk. In fact acai is 95% seed and 5% fruit, with 50% of the fruit being a fat, but healthy fat (like avocado). Few people know that acai can also grow really well in Hawaii! We have many acai trees planted on our farm along the Hanalei river.

We have had a lot of people ask how to make acai bowls, so here is our recipe for the perfect acai bowl. Enjoy!

The Perfect ACAI Bowl Recipe

Ingredients:

2 packs of organic unsweetened acai (We love Tambor!)

1 small frozen apple banana

1/4-1/2 cup of organic almond milk, water or apple juice (whatever you prefer!)

Granola (homemade is best, otherwise pick an option from the store with minimal sugar)

Optional toppings: Cut ripe bananas, berries, papaya (or any other fresh fruit that is in season), hemp hearts, cacao nibs (we use nibs grown on our farm!) peanut butter, bee pollen, honey, etc.

Instructions:

Run your acai packs under water to lightly soften and try to break them up a bit. Add bananas and acai to blender. Put in 1/4 cup of liquid and blend (starting on low). Make sure you are using a good blender (we like vitamix) and are constantly pushing the smoothie around in the blender. Once it is completely blended put in a bowl, top with 1 cup of granola and fresh fruits. We like to add goji berries, coconut chips, honey and peanut butter to the top. Feel free to experiment with different toppings! You can also mix spirulina, spinach, protein powder, etc to your smoothie to up the health benefits. Have fun!
